In honor of Valentine’s Day this coming Friday, we are dedicating this newsletter to the things that we love! Those things that give us butterflies (and/or rumbles) in our tummies, the mac to our cheese. So without further adieu, we’d like to give our Valentines this year to:
Soup season
Our Soup CSA is at its halfway point, but if you’d like to dive in for the remaining weeks, you can do so on our website here (or call or visit to sign up). Tomorrow, we’ll be celebrating Souper Bowl Sundae at Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery. A bowl of hot soup and a large sundae for just $11.99! Eat in or take it to go. We’ll be open tomorrow (2/9) 8am-3pm, and our freezer is fully stocked with other soups to heat up for the big game.
The Eagles
And we’re not (necessarily) talking about the ones playing the Chief’s tomorrow. It looks like our resident pair of eagles are working on nest building! You can often see the bald eagles from Barstow’s, perched on trees along the river’s edge or soaring high above the fields and mountain. See if you can spot them when you come in today to grab game day essentials like Cabot cheese, chips and dip, cookies, chicken tenders, mac and cheese, and beer.
Please do note that these animals require solitude and peace so as not to abandon their nest – the nest is on private property. We, and they, thank you for your respectful distance.
Wine Haus
Cheers to the delightful reds and whites on our shelves from Wine Haus out of Granby, MA! We have the perfect selection of wine (we also carry Mineral Hills Winery wine), Cabot cheese, and delectable sweets from our bakery for your Valentine this coming Friday. It is not too late to place your Valentine’s Day special order with our bakery: cheesecakes, cupcakes, cinnamon swirls…. stop in, email, or drop us a line at 413-586-2142.
Red girls
In a month that is all pinks and reds, shout out to the beautiful Red and White Holstein. The red and white markings on these cows is a recessive trait; so unlike her black and white Holstein sisters, both mom and dad were red heads too. Our youngest Red and White on the farm was born January 14 and was aptly named Amber through the Name the Calf Contest at the store.
Heart Healthy Milk
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recognize that evidence shows milk and milk products are linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as lower blood pressure in adults. Milk contains 13(!!) essential nutrients. One of them is potassium which helps the body maintain healthy blood pressure and supports heart health. YAY for healthy hearts!
Local artists
Are you in search of a unique, local, lovingly crafted gift for your Valentine? Local artists at Barstow’s have beautiful cards, pottery, soaps, wood work, books, bird houses, candles, and more to choose from. We also have gift certificates for lunch and ice cream dates in the year ahead!
Our community
And a very Happy Valentine’s Day to those who bring so much love and heart to our farm and farm store each and every day: our Barstow’s team members, farmhands, veterinarians, artists, suppliers, and of course YOU! Thank you for your ongoing support of your neighborhood dairy farm! We’ll see you soon!
